My father began
his military service as a private in the 29th Division. He was assigned to the
104th. Quartermaster Regiment, Company F Third Battalion in Richmond,Va. My
father would never talk about the war until a few years before his death. I was
able to sit down with him on several occasions and retrace his foot steps
across Europe. My father was promoted to the rank of Tech. Corporal in Plemton
England just before the invasion. After a rough crossing and landing at Omaha
Beach, he along with his division make there way to St. Lo and other towns and
cities across Europe. My father made it to the Elbe River in Germany by the end
of April 1945 just as the war was coming to an end. I have always been very
proud of my father and the men and women that have and are still serving our
nation. Respectfully, Robert W. Puryear

My father in law, whom I never
had the privilege of meeting, served as a corporal in the 29th infantry
division. His name was Harold Mitnick and he was a Dispatcher. He was awarded
the Bronze Star, Silver Cross and Purple Heart. He served in the effort to
capture St. Lo. from D-Day until the capture of St. Lo on 7/18/1944. I am
honored to be associated with him and to enjoy the freedom that he helped
achieve for us. His beautiful daughter Karen is my wife of 25 years. I salute
him, Neil Deedy

116th machine guns. I have two incidents which are interesting to me. Near
Aachen a German SP 88 came to a stop between us and the Germans
across the road. I killed the escort and we got it with A T
grenades. On thanksgiving at Koslar a platoon faked surrendering and got
some of our group (cut off from the riflemen in Koslar) until we
moved the gun and sprayed them to kill an unknown number. No officers with us, our
medals we were our lives. Too bad this site came with so many gone.

My
great uncle, Fred Freedel served in the 29th Division, Regiment 175,
Company I. The family was told he was killed on July 4, 1944 near
Villiers-Fossard. This past September, my husband and I who are from Pittsburgh
traveled to France and found this small village as well as a memorial that had
just been established this past June. If anyone has any information about my
great uncle or company I of this regiment 175, I would greatly appreciate
hearing from them. After touring Normandy, I sincerely believe these men who
served were definitely “The Greatest Generation”.

Years ago, many members of the
29th helped me with background research on the Roer river Assault in
February 1943. Part of the knowledge AND UNDERSTANDING I gained from this
help ended up in my Ph.D thesis that focused on an Engineer Maintenance company
that supported the 29th Division from November 1944 to the end of
the war. The Company (978th Engineer Maintenance Company) was
attached to both the 1104th and 11155th Engineer Combat
Groups. My father served in the 978th at the time, hence the
focus. This is my very belated but heartfelt “thank you” to the men from many
of the units in the 29th who took the time to teach me. Theron P.
Snell, Ph.D

I have just been assigned as a
Platoon Leader with C- 3/116 INF. Thank you all for your service and for
helping me to remember what it means to be a combat leader. I will work
hard to be the leader my soldiers need me to be and will always lead them from
the front and put their needs before my own. It's been a pleasure reading
these tales gentlemen; you all have my deepest respect... soldier to soldier. Very
Respectfully, Jonathan Pungello
